When is an assessment helpful?
- Symptoms worsen after standing or sitting.
- The ankle becomes darker, itchy or firm.
- A wound is slow to heal or a vein has bled.
What happens at the visit?
- We discuss symptoms, work and medical history.
- Standing leg-vein ultrasound locates reflux.
- Treatment is discussed according to symptoms and anatomy.
Common symptoms

| Heaviness or aching | Worse after standing | Arrange vascular assessment |
| Swelling or cramps | Often later in the day | Note timing and frequency |
| Skin change or wound | More advanced disease may be present | Seek care early |
| Sudden one-sided swelling | A clot must be excluded | Seek urgent care |
Note: Skin discoloration, firmness or a slow-healing wound deserves ultrasound assessment.
