Treatment should start with a standing leg-vein ultrasound to identify where reflux begins. Options may include observation, compression, minimally invasive laser, medical adhesive, treatment of visible branches, or surgery—depending on your anatomy, symptoms and daily needs.
When should you arrange an assessment?
- Aching, heaviness, burning or itching that worsens after standing
- Visible bulging veins or clusters of spider veins
- Ankle swelling, skin discoloration or a wound near the ankle

- Symptoms returning after previous treatment
What happens at the first visit?
We begin with the problem that affects your daily life most. A physical examination and standing ultrasound can show whether blood is flowing backwards, which vein is responsible, and whether the deep veins are open.
You will receive a clear explanation of what needs treatment, what can be observed, and what each option means for anaesthesia, recovery, compression stockings and cost.
Minimally invasive treatment options
- Endovenous laser uses heat to close a refluxing truncal vein and usually requires anaesthetic injections along the vein.
- Medical adhesive is a non-thermal option and usually does not require anaesthetic injections along the treated vein.
- Visible branch veins may need a separate small-incision treatment or injection treatment.
- Traditional surgery remains useful in selected situations, but usually involves more incisions, bruising and recovery than modern minimally invasive treatment.
Recovery in everyday terms
After laser treatment, many patients plan for 2–3 days of lighter activity and usually wear compression for 2–4 weeks. After medical adhesive, most patients do not need special time off and many wear compression for about one week.

Do all visible veins need treatment?
No. Treatment depends on symptoms, ultrasound findings, skin changes and your goals—not appearance alone.
Is laser always better than medical adhesive?
No single method is best for everyone. Vein anatomy, allergy history, previous treatment, expected recovery, compression preference and cost all matter.
