Warning signs and complications of varicose veins

Most varicose veins do not suddenly become emergencies, but some changes should not be ignored.
- Redness, heat, pain or a firm cord
- Sudden one-sided swelling
- Brown or firm ankle skin
- Bleeding or a slow-healing wound
1.Superficial vein inflammation
- A vein may suddenly become red, hot and tender.
- It may feel like a firm cord.
- Assessment determines its extent and proximity to deep veins.
2.Skin change and wounds
- Long-term pressure can darken ankle skin.
- Skin may become itchy, thick or firm.
- Severe disease may cause a slow-healing venous wound.

| Bleeding or wound | Needs bleeding and venous care | Apply pressure and seek care |
Note: Chest pain, shortness of breath or coughing blood requires emergency care.
